Diageo, the country’s largest liquor company, pledges 45 crore rupees for Covid-19 relief efforts in India, Retail News, ET Retail

Bengaluru: Diageo, which sells alcohol brands such as Johnie Walker, Black Dog and McDowell’s No 1, has pledged Rs 45 crore to support India’s health infrastructure amid the second wave of the pandemic.

The fund will be used by Diageo to help nodal government hospitals in 21 districts set up oxygen plants and 16-bed mini-hospital units in 15 hard-hit districts. Diageo will also donate medical equipment such as oxygen concentrators, oxygen cylinders, ventilation beds and other critical devices to public hospitals in ten states.

Diageo has adopted the “One District, One State” approach to ensure that support reaches one district in every state and Union territory.

With this, the country’s largest alcohol company has so far contributed Rs 130 crore for Covid relief measures, said Anand Kripalu, managing director and CEO of Diageo India.

“At a time when the country faces an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, we want to support the efforts of the government and support the citizens of India. Long-term medical infrastructure, especially hospital beds and oxygen self-sufficiency, is what we need most and we hope that our contribution to all states and UT will help play a role. in the recovery of India, ”Kripalu added.

This initiative will be supported by the national investment promotion agency Invest India and executed by GiveIndia by prioritizing the requirements of state authorities and identifying critical districts, the company said.

In the past year, Diageo India has produced three lakh liters of bulk hand sanitizer out of 15

manufacturing units for public health workers and donated 1.5 lakh masks to five state public health departments. The company introduced Rs 3 crore health insurance for bartenders and launched a Rs 75 crore fund as part of its global “Raising the Bar” program last June to help pubs, bars and restaurants that were among the first. victims of the country’s first lockdown.

India is fighting the second wave of the pandemic and is seeing a record number of Covid-19 cases on a daily basis, which has put extreme pressure on the country’s health infrastructure. Hospitals in several states face a shortage of health workers, vaccines, oxygen, drugs and beds. Aid has poured into the country from the biggest companies around the world.

Last week, another alcobev company Anheuser Busch InBev (AB InBev) – the maker of beer Budweiser – hired essential Covid-19-related services and medical infrastructure support to several state governments across the country. As part of the initiative, the world’s largest brewer is equipping states fighting the deadly second wave with oxygen concentrators, essential aid kits for families affected by Covid-19, masks and test in about 50 villages. AB InBev is also in the process of setting up a Covid hospital bed capacity at a hospital in the city of Bengaluru.

Alcohol company Beam Suntory, the maker of premium whiskey brands Jim Beam, Yamazaki and Hibiki, has also pledged a donation of Rs 4.4 crore to support Covid-19 relief measures in India.

Microblogging giant Twitter recently donated $ 15 million to help resolve the Covid-19 crisis in India. Twitter’s move follows similar donations from tech giants Google and Microsoft a month ago. Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Oppo and Vivo have also extended their support for India’s fight against Covid-19 by donating oxygenators, respirators and ventilators.

India’s death toll from Covid-19 has crossed the 3 lakh mark after 4,454 people have died from the virus in the past 24 hours. This makes India the third country after the United States and Brazil to record more than 3 lakh deaths, according to data from the Union Health Ministry updated on Monday.
